Actress Eugene has been cast in an upcoming weekend TV drama series that is scheduled to premiere in August.

Eugene will mark her return to acting after an absence of more than a year since giving birth to her first child with husband Ki Tae-Young in April.

Director Lee Geon-jun also directed Eugene’s debut TV drama “Loving You” in 2002, when Eugene transitioned to acting from her K-pop career.

The upcoming KBS2 TV drama, entitled “Bu Tak Hae Yo, Umma,” centers on mother-daughter relationships.

Eugene is cast as Lee Jin-ae, who dreams of running away from her family and living an independent life far from her mother. When she falls in love and marries, she encounters an even more formidable force in the guise of her mother-in-law.

“Jin-ae really didn’t want to resemble her mother, but she ends up living the same life as her and begins understanding her more as a daughter,” said a KBS insider. “We are hoping this will be a ‘spectacular story’ of a woman who is forced to become a little more mature.”

Dealing with themes such as family and empathy, the KBS drama grapples with common disagreements between Korean mothers and daughters, as demonstrated when mothers tell their daughters, “I hope you have a daughter just like you when you grow up.”

“Bu Tak Hae Yo, Umma” is scheduled to debut Aug. 15 after the current KBS weekend drama “House of Bluebird.”
