Singer-actress Suzy of Miss A, talked about why she chose to play the role of Jin Chae-sun, Korea’s first female pansori singer, in new periodic flick “The Sound of a Flower,” as a film to return after a three-year-hiatus since box-office hit rom-com “Architecture 101” in 2012.

“When I first read the scenario, I really wanted to do it and I cried a little too. I don’t know why,” she said at a press conference of the film on Thursday in Seoul. “At first, I worried a little because I (had to sing) pansori (traditional Korean narrative singing.), but I wanted to challenge myself, so that’s why I chose this role.” She shared one of the most memorable scene in the film as well. “There is a line where I say ‘Do I have to live like this?’” she said. “She could have lived as a gisaeng (female entertainer) but she had her dream set on being a pansori singer. And I think the line explains a lot about her character and her dream.” The flick, directed by Lee Jong-pil, is based on a real story between Joseon era pansori theoretician Shin Jae-hyo, played by Ryu Seung-ryong, and his gifted student Jin Chae-sun, the first female pansori singer, played by Suzy.“The Sound of a Flower” also stars Song Sae-byuk as a famous pansori singer Kim Se-jong and Kim Nam-gil, as prince regent Heungseon Daewongun. The film opens in theaters on Nov. 25By Ahn Sung-mi ()
